Swear I ain't dead

Hey guys! I swear I have some ideas in the works. Got a soul cobbler, a mental hospital thing (i'm in an abnormal psych course right now, gimme a break), and some other things cooking up north.

It's day two of week one of my last winter quarter at RIT and I'm already nice and stymied in homework. It's good to be back, but I really miss all that free time I had over break to just paint paint paint.

I just emailed a couple illustrator heroes of mine for my business and marketing class and damn, I'm nervous. I really hope to hear back from them, but considering two of them are across the pond, phone conversations could be difficult. Ooo wee. I am compulsively checking my email right now and biting my nails off...

I'm in book illustration, and if any you people who read this knew me in high school, you might remember my silly little story/animation about Xander and his Magnificent Flying Machine. No? Well... My book this quarter is gonna be Xander, a few years later, after his bird pal flew away and he became a pilot and is fighting in the war. (1940s, I thunk). His plane goes down over a distant jungle and he's stranded until... you guessed it, his ol' bird pal, all grown up, happens upon him and they fly away together. Predictable? Sure, but for a kid's book, I'm excited. Drawing planes, dudes and birds, well, I'm in.

Pretty packed quarter so far and i haven't even gotten to Visual Essay yet, but as they say down south, bring it on.

reporter stuff..

For Reporter. Dean of COLA just stepped down..... This is that guy and the provost.

Just downloaded CS5... I love it but haven't really delved into all its new features. Still just using it like I used CS3.
Guess I should get on some tutorials and see what I can do with this spiffy new engine!!! The illustration vehicle continues to roll....

Now, onto a marijuana illustration. And finishing that portrait of that skinny russian guy.

Happy turkey day, y'all!

facepaint vojtech- WIP

So it's 5 a.m.... Oops.

Photoshop painting... about 1 1/2 hours so far, all together, minus interruptions.

Pretty okay with it so far. Only used one brush at this point, about time I switch it up and get some dimension in there.

model is from a figure model reference site. He has a really pronounced lower jaw and his proportions are naturally wonky, which keeps throwing me off. Which makes it more fun.

1 hour nude practice

Hey guys! I just got home from RIT for tgiving break. I'm tired but felt the need to art about.

So, 1 hour, told myself to get as far as I could rendering a nude.
Found the model on some figure drawing reference site.

didn't really do anything to arms, hands, or feet/legs.

Need to get faster/more accurate but I'm pretty happy with this, as I haven't done any digital painting since the beginning of the quarter (excluding made up guts and gore for reporter).

Yak yak yak.

Me, tank/jet girl esque, on a yak/ram thing...

Aaaaand the three pieces the amazing Joi Ong and I collaborated on. Model is the lovely Gabi Ripka. I'm pretty proud of this. I painted the gore, Joi shot Gabi, and Gabi, Jena and I screamed a lot.

So... Fall quarter is (almost) over.
I need to figure out which style to stick to, to maybe possibly get a job someday.

I also plan to take photos of my friends (or have them take one if they're too far away) and then do acrylic portraits based off that, rather than using the gorgeous photos of steve mccurry.
It'll be so much more challenging as I'll be afraid to offend people. If you're willing to be painted, please let me know!

I hope to draw a lot over break. Travel safe, everyone!

On illustration board.

eh there's definitely things I'd change and still might but.... I had fun with it.

a man, me, and some viscera

Hey y'all. Happy week ten to all my fellow quarter sufferers.
Top piece is a quick 45 minute acrylic scribble of a bloodstained afghanistani soldier photogged by the amazing Steve McCurry, who I'm obsessed with.
Then... Me with Pirate, my fav horse. Then... dead me with my demon horse. yayyy.
And finally...
PICK UP A REPORTER MAGAZINE THIS FRIDAY. Because.
The AMAZING Joi Ong and I collaborated for the cover/feature, about the body falling apart due to stress.
She took beautiful photos of Gabi Ripka, and then I drew horrible things over the pictures.
After it's published, I'll post full photos, but here's some super pixellated teasers for now.

EDIT- added another quick 40 minute acrylic painting. a girl! from herat, afghanistan, original photo taken by steve mccurry in 1992.
I'm getting more and more painterly/stroke-y... i think i like it.

Spacey

hiya guys. I'm goin' on 3 hours of sleep here. Then I ran into a guy whilst ice skating and he fell on top of me. I cracked my skull on the ice. So... maybe that's why all these things are so wonky right now.

I don't really know where the astroape came from but I like him.
I think I"m going to try colouring the original linework digitally as well for kicks.
Last piece there was for our in class sketchbook assignment- about a pop culture misconception where this person thought Flash Gordon and The Flash were one and the same. Well, Ming the Merciless is rather confused by this guy...

All ink and watercolour.

on mcbess and motorcycles

So I fell in love with McBess. Matthieu Bessido. Yep.
Also, for sketchbook class we had to draw five pages of something we suck at drawing. So... Planes, automobiles... I suck at. So. MOTORCYCLES! PLANES! i like the f-117a nighthawk. Well, I'm obsessed with them and have a poster of one flying over the nevada desert.
I'm a total gearhead, but I can't draw any of it for beans.
My dad however, is AMAZING at drawing vehicles. But HE can't draw people. That's all I can draw. my mum can't even draw a stick figure.

Funny how that works.

oh. aaaand bar doodles.
