DILLOS

I do not know why. but tonight i was possessed by the need... to draw ARMADILLOS. which quickly turned into hungover and dylan dillos.
some colour on that one
Found a photo off the Peace Corps' facebook of a winter scene in 1971 Iran. Thought it was pretty... and then did this in 20 minutes. Then I got bored, because I don't like doing landscapes... and moved on.

Count yer blessin's

... for instance... I've got perfect teeth. Never had braces. Damn grateful.

Voodoo priests. AKA I was watching princess & the frog and I'm in love with the Shadow Man.

and oh hey doodly saloon chick.

But yeah, I'm going through some scary stuff. I have to go back to taking a medicine that makes me very very sick.

It'll all be just fine though, I know it.

Jimi and cowboys

hour and a half acrylic mess of jimi
some cowboys
'nother cowboy
aand another.

Needless to say, I saw True Grit. Hence all the cowboys. It was a fantastic movie, and I highly recommend it.
And Black Swan. And Tron.
I attempted to start some bigger portraits tonight but Northwest Ohio is REALLY lacking in art stores. So... I'm going to pray I find something soon so I can actually do them.

I've been watching Inglorious Basterds and Amelie all night, so currently it is rather tough to think in English.
hm.

Post xmas update

an xmas card for a lovely lady i know :)
A monster I doodled in about ten minutes, sitting on the edge of a couch, killing time.
doodled this girl before i went to sleep. then...
i painted her.
and a hipster santa card for an awesome kid I know.

Hey y'all! A lot's happened since my last post. For instance:
I've got an up and running website with my domain name! it's the same thing, but easier to get to. Update your links, guys!

in other news... I haven't posted because I've been busy making xmas cards for some people. I included a couple on here, but for most I actually forgot to take pictures. I didn't make too many because I spent a lot of time on each one, and I only made them for people who asked.
But it was fun.

Expect another post here soon- I'm gonna do a series of native american portraits for a show in Rochester the first week of January. I just have to get around to doing it.

Hope everyone had a lovely stress free safe travel christmas!

Puddle monsters and portraits

A couple quick acrylic portraits to blow off some stress. Steve mcCurry photos, obvs. Full view 'em, they look better bigger.
Today I was in a very early morning class and had trudged in through a rather monumental amount of snow.
As I sat there, trying desperately to feign alertness, I realized that my snowboots had dripped a rather sizable puddle onto the floor.
A puddle that looked all funny. So I drew the puddle. And the puddle turned into that guy up there.
He totally was throwing up the horns, man.
and then i watercoloured it. woooo.

more speedpaints.

more 40 minute or so speedpaints on the train. spent more time on the skull for fun's sake.

bottom one is me. I tried a few other self- portraits and oy. I can draw ANYONE else pretty well but I just have a horrific time painting moi.

I'm back in Rochester. NYC was nice. The concert was amazing.
I've decided I am not in love with any city or coast, really.
Will go anywhere.

Train travel speedpaints

about 40 minutes or so each on a bumpy Amtrak from Roch to NYC.
Now in NYC.... I plan to sketch when I can but I honestly think I'll be too busy checking out museums, shops and Rammstein concerts :)

I missed the city but... now that I'm older... and I've hung out in a lot of cities... I don't want to live here in NYC necessarily. A smaller metropolis would be lovely though.

Vojtech face study... done?

I think I'm done with this. I enjoyed it greatly. Put in about 6 hours of painting on photoshop.

I'm getting better at faces- next part I need to improve is bodies. I get so caught up in facial details that I tend to forget about the rest. Oops.

Oh well. Back to homework! Fun time over :(

ALSO. If you're a friend of mine and you have a website, please give it to me... I'll link you up on my infant baby barely begun website : Illustration by Joanna
If you're already on there, double check to make sure my link to you works!

Swear I ain't dead

Hey guys! I swear I have some ideas in the works. Got a soul cobbler, a mental hospital thing (i'm in an abnormal psych course right now, gimme a break), and some other things cooking up north.

It's day two of week one of my last winter quarter at RIT and I'm already nice and stymied in homework. It's good to be back, but I really miss all that free time I had over break to just paint paint paint.

I just emailed a couple illustrator heroes of mine for my business and marketing class and damn, I'm nervous. I really hope to hear back from them, but considering two of them are across the pond, phone conversations could be difficult. Ooo wee. I am compulsively checking my email right now and biting my nails off...

I'm in book illustration, and if any you people who read this knew me in high school, you might remember my silly little story/animation about Xander and his Magnificent Flying Machine. No? Well... My book this quarter is gonna be Xander, a few years later, after his bird pal flew away and he became a pilot and is fighting in the war. (1940s, I thunk). His plane goes down over a distant jungle and he's stranded until... you guessed it, his ol' bird pal, all grown up, happens upon him and they fly away together. Predictable? Sure, but for a kid's book, I'm excited. Drawing planes, dudes and birds, well, I'm in.

Pretty packed quarter so far and i haven't even gotten to Visual Essay yet, but as they say down south, bring it on.

reporter stuff..

For Reporter. Dean of COLA just stepped down..... This is that guy and the provost.

Just downloaded CS5... I love it but haven't really delved into all its new features. Still just using it like I used CS3.
Guess I should get on some tutorials and see what I can do with this spiffy new engine!!! The illustration vehicle continues to roll....

Now, onto a marijuana illustration. And finishing that portrait of that skinny russian guy.

Happy turkey day, y'all!

facepaint vojtech- WIP

So it's 5 a.m.... Oops.

Photoshop painting... about 1 1/2 hours so far, all together, minus interruptions.

Pretty okay with it so far. Only used one brush at this point, about time I switch it up and get some dimension in there.

model is from a figure model reference site. He has a really pronounced lower jaw and his proportions are naturally wonky, which keeps throwing me off. Which makes it more fun.

1 hour nude practice

Hey guys! I just got home from RIT for tgiving break. I'm tired but felt the need to art about.

So, 1 hour, told myself to get as far as I could rendering a nude.
Found the model on some figure drawing reference site.

didn't really do anything to arms, hands, or feet/legs.

Need to get faster/more accurate but I'm pretty happy with this, as I haven't done any digital painting since the beginning of the quarter (excluding made up guts and gore for reporter).

Yak yak yak.

Me, tank/jet girl esque, on a yak/ram thing...

Aaaaand the three pieces the amazing Joi Ong and I collaborated on. Model is the lovely Gabi Ripka. I'm pretty proud of this. I painted the gore, Joi shot Gabi, and Gabi, Jena and I screamed a lot.

So... Fall quarter is (almost) over.
I need to figure out which style to stick to, to maybe possibly get a job someday.

I also plan to take photos of my friends (or have them take one if they're too far away) and then do acrylic portraits based off that, rather than using the gorgeous photos of steve mccurry.
It'll be so much more challenging as I'll be afraid to offend people. If you're willing to be painted, please let me know!

I hope to draw a lot over break. Travel safe, everyone!

Sitting Bear

yay it's done! took about... 4 hours straight.
Acrylic/pen/ink... 11 x 14? I think?
On illustration board.

eh there's definitely things I'd change and still might but.... I had fun with it.

a man, me, and some viscera

Hey y'all. Happy week ten to all my fellow quarter sufferers.
Top piece is a quick 45 minute acrylic scribble of a bloodstained afghanistani soldier photogged by the amazing Steve McCurry, who I'm obsessed with.
Then... Me with Pirate, my fav horse. Then... dead me with my demon horse. yayyy.
And finally...
PICK UP A REPORTER MAGAZINE THIS FRIDAY. Because.
The AMAZING Joi Ong and I collaborated for the cover/feature, about the body falling apart due to stress.
She took beautiful photos of Gabi Ripka, and then I drew horrible things over the pictures.
After it's published, I'll post full photos, but here's some super pixellated teasers for now.

EDIT- added another quick 40 minute acrylic painting. a girl! from herat, afghanistan, original photo taken by steve mccurry in 1992.
I'm getting more and more painterly/stroke-y... i think i like it.
