Finally made some art for myself.
My favorite Red Wing: Henrik Zetterberg. About 1.5 hours... Photoshop.
Also... Good LORD do I want one of those beautiful 2013 winter classic jerseys. So awesome.
thirty minute warm up.. as usual, i got caught up in the face...
20 min scribble... definitely not that great.

Hi guys! look! i can still paint realistically!
This was a lot of fun. Digital. about.... 4hours. I had some downtime at work and this is what happened. There's definitely some places for improvement, but for not painting realistically in a reeeallllyyy long time, I'm really happy with the result.
I feel like this is my most successful use of color so far. I'm always learning.
big oops though- i painted it pretty much on one layer in photoshop. i hear some places that is a nono. :/
Woop!

Chevy and Nixon
here's a quick 40 minute practice of a new technique. scribbled with pencil then wouldn't let myself use opaque paint. just layered a lot of acrylic washes. man, it's hard to not just slap down the paint i want to. Eh, it's a start. Young Chevy Chase.
COuple scribbles from my "research" in the art books in the RIT library. I could spend years in there and still never get bored. nixon and the exxon valdez tiger.

two paintings and a monster doodle.

here's a portrait of the beautiful Kyrie Chamberlain. She painted me in a valentine, and I said I'd paint her too. Acrylic, hour and a half.

and this is a BMW bike I painted on a bday card for my boyfriend. watercolour, pen/ink...
i'm still kinda crap at painting vehicles but slowly, i'm getting better.

I think this little guy is going to show up in the near future.... ;)
In other news, I'm hoping to throw together a show in our studio for First Friday in April, a lot like last year's Gun Show. More details to come.
staayyy tuned!

Datsyuk winking speedpaint

I think it took about an hour, somewhat over?
Oh well. Pavel Datsyuk, of the Red Wings, winking. Because he's disgustingly good. Cheeky bastard.
Ref image snagged off the twitter account @notpaveldatsyuk which is hilarious.
eh, could be better. Still pulling myself out of this art rut hole i've dug myself into.

I'm in a rut
I'm having an awful go of it lately. I can't seem to paint well at all right now. Nothing's going how I want it to. To say it's depressing and frustrating doesn't even begin to cover it.Well, here's another struggling failure. I was trying to paint Gil Perreault. It's... not where I want it to be. But again, I figure I should post my failures as well as my successes.
I'm sorry. I'll try to get my ability back soon. I feel like a bird whose wings have been burnt off. or something else metaphorically horrible. I'm really disappointed and I don't know how to break out of it.

datsyuk n doodles.
Pavel Datsyuk. Red Wings. Awesome.I spent maybe 45 minutes on this. It's definitely not my best work, especially if I compare it to the portrait I did of Sawchuk or even the quick paints of McDonald and Lidstrom.
I didn't get the likeness like I usually do.
I hope to do another, better one at some point. But you gotta post your not so good failures with your accomplishments. Such is progress.
oh here's a ten minute or something scribble i did. Yeup.

Fred McDowell
The other day my boyfriend bought a vinyl recording of '"Mississippi'"Fred McDowell. He's a country-blues genius originally from Tennessee who built his own guitar and embodies all that is grunge and black n blues. One afternoon we sat there just listening to this record, hearing his chair creakin' and foot hittin' the old no doubt weathered porch as he kept time. His wife occasionally accompanied. Well, let's just say it's good stuff.
So we had a little show at my studio space in the Hungerford last night, and the night before I was still at a loss of what to paint for it. Carter suggests Fred McDowell and so in about 3 hours, this happened.
Acrylic on cold press ill board. about 8x10.
I haven't painted traditionally in over a month or so. My photo reference was blacka nd white. In fact, I have never found a color photo of the man. So I just kinda guessed what his skin tone was. The first thirty minutes were just me slapping horrible chalky colours around, kinda quagmired in skin tones. Then suddenly it just happened.

God, that's a great feeling. I think I may have pushed the highlights too far in the end. Well, you live, you learn.
Thanks for stoppin' by!

zombie greaser
Been in a bit of a creative rut lately. Been working on some commissions and been doing work for work. Ended up in the hospital last week. So good at taking care of myself.
This is entirely from my brain. I didn't know he'd become covered in blood but.. i had a lot of lovely looking Cadmium Light Red to use and eh... it happened.
No photo reference. Couple hours, most of those hours spent watching Inception.
Acrylic in moleskine.

A couple portraits
Allo all!
Heed my advice: when it is 94 degrees outside, do not I repeat DO NOT go to your un airconditioned notoriously hot studio space.
You will get heat stroke and sport a lovely headache the rest of the evening.
Here's a McCurry portrait of a boy from India and a 21st century Rocker girl from Britain.
Acrylic, about an hour each, give or take a few minutes. Please full view!

Ten minute warmup of a tribal boy, also from Steve McCurry's book Portraits.

i'm alive.
just started painting out of my head. acrylic. looks better in reality. the Wash is because that's the bon iver song i've had in my head and on repeat for weeks now.
five minute lemmy mess and ... i don't know what.
snails i was designing for a game at work. :)So I've been animating. It's crazy tough, like learning a whole new language. But when all the frustration and hair pulling gives way to your character coming to life, it's the most beautiful feeling ever. I've been designing Flash games and it is tough, but I really enjoy it.
Barely moved in and my car got broken into. Hoping I can do more art soon. I've got lots of ideas, but nothing is coming out like I want it to. It's frustrating and heart breaking.
c'est la vie c'est la guerre.
