Back in Business/nyc wrapup

did this on the train coming home. once it's published, i'll say what it's for. Digital. Used my hands for reference, made up everything else. about four hours straight. And I had fun. I'm pretty happy with this, honestly!!! Full view please!

in NYC. That's Kayla Tucker. We were sitting and drawing in central park on a big rock.
Random people I saw around. One is the curator of Illustration house, there's Soho people, Bryant park people, and other places.
sketch night at Society of Illustrators stuff
This beauty is my coyote skull I bought at Evolution on Spring Street down in SoHo. Oh MAN I love that place. Expect more coyote skulls with my horse skulls. THey had a gorgeous horse skull.. but I don't have 495 bucks to blow.
oh some random doodle i did some time ago..

Anyways, NYC wrap up... I don't really wanna live there UNLESS it's the Lower East Side. Or Noho. or Soho. but you need moneyss. I hear good things about Bushwick, too. Anyone wants to move there with me, I am game. It is THE up and coming art center!!! (but shoot for fixed rent!)

But oh GOD. Galleries, cool bakeries, amazing record stores, and the BEST dumplings ever (thanks megan and maruska!!!) ... Pretty good times.

Learned a lot, felt like i was gonna make it, felt like i'd never make it, was pumped up, humbled, and generally exhausted.

but I did have one thing absolutely hammered down for me.

I want to be an illustrator.

I realize it's going to be tough nigh impossible, but dammit. I love this. I want this. I know this.
Tough to explain, but I just know it.

gnight, off to doodle and pass the heck out.

some break paintings

quick watercolor doodle of some sailor guy i made up
flight deck grunt from Battlestar Galactica, which a good friend has gotten me hooked on...
Some interesting telephone lines I drew while sitting in a car waiting for ten minutes.

Hello guys, I'm on spring break. It is not spring, but it is a break, so I'm spending it applying to jobs, ordering biz cards/mailers, and painting when I'm not asleep. I'm recovering from a very tough, very stressful winter quarter. But hey, I got a 4.0!!!! All A's, baby!!!!

Totally worth all that hell and throwing away my social life haha

Hope to paint more... all i have home right now is my watercolours and a tablet.

Some gladiators, some pugs.

sad spartacus. gouache. no pencil underdrawings.
more sparty. gouache. no pencil underdrawings on these.
PUGS. again, just goin' for it. no pencil underdrawings.
doodling people at the mall. and a very distorted guitar.

Been watching Spartacus thanks to a certain person. Which means lots of opportunities to study (for artistic reasons only of course) naked people.

Been very busy lately- will have more pieces up soon.

Baby Carrots.

couple things for sketchbook.
First one- prompt was "baby carrots". So. Yeah. watercolour/pen/ink
Had to draw some plants. So I drew a rose I saw growing up the side of a building in Giverny (Monet's home) in France.
And a gnarly tree growing out of the rocks at Dead Horse Point, Utah.
Then, some messy doodles with sharpie bleeding thru. I'm gonna do more work this way.
Finally, first attempt at oil painting in a really long time. 18 x24. I'm waiting for it to dry before I fix stuff.
Next piece is going to be acrylic. Probably a portrait. Or something funny.

I can't paint like other artists. I'm gonna try to use the rest of this quarter to figure out MY style. Whatever it is.

whatever week this is

Alright. Some fabric painted for chad's sketchbook class... And we had an in class assignment. We had to illustrate "Who attacked Umar Cheema?" which is an article. Google it. Basically, a rather outspoken journalist in Pakistan gets abducted, beaten horrifically etc. etc. And he came out to talk about it.

So yeah, that's him getting violently gagged by a press mic. and strangled with a rope.

Acrylic, pen/ink, pencil.

Another stormy day

so, after a sunny morning memorial day parade and running about in the ensuing storms, i sequestered myself into the porch and drew all day. So far. I mean, it's only 9:00... Who knows what else I might do...
Keith Richards doodle and then weirdness.

Thunderstorms? Guess I'll stay in and draw.

started drawing an Annie Leibovitz photo of Miles Davis in 1989. (mechanical pencil)
and there's a doodly pen guy... and a girl with my backyard behind her. and a dead ant. Because, that's summer in Northwest Ohio.
