I spent maybe 45 minutes on this. It's definitely not my best work, especially if I compare it to the portrait I did of Sawchuk or even the quick paints of McDonald and Lidstrom.
I didn't get the likeness like I usually do.

I hope to do another, better one at some point. But you gotta post your not so good failures with your accomplishments. Such is progress.

I am alive. And I still paint. So many of the things I've been working on I can't post yet, or maybe ever at all, as they belong to Nickelodeon. But I'll tell you I'm pretty excited about how much better I'm getting at things and stuff :)

Here's some stuff I did over the holidaze.

First off, this is one of the prezzies I gave to my boyfriend. He'd mentioned at some point over the summer that his favorite kid's book was Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel. So, I painted the steam shovel from that book and made him Mike Mulligan. Sorry these pics are all blurry, they're cell phone shots.

Detail! I did it in pencil, acrylic, and oil pastel. It's about 20x15 or so. Pretty sure he liked it :)
This is a commission i did for the lovely Lucy Lott via Brett Seamans. It's... their cat on a horse. Yep. It's on an iphone case now. Which is pretty spiffy. Acrylic.

The Christmas card I made for my boyfriend's family. He said, "uh, just paint them a horse in snow or something". But this summer, when we went to some reunion shindig with the rest of his clan, someone brought their pet pot bellied pig. It was hilarious. So I included that in there.
i was painting buster keaton for my dad. I got a little further than that, called it quits, left it unfinished. Which actually ended up working out in the end.

Had a dream over break involving Paris and lots of lights. It isn't done. If I ever get time to finish this painting, I will. There will be a boat with a girl and lanterns and fireflies and blahdiblahdiblah.

The other day my boyfriend bought a vinyl recording of '"Mississippi'"Fred McDowell. He's a country-blues genius originally from Tennessee who built his own guitar and embodies all that is grunge and black n blues. One afternoon we sat there just listening to this record, hearing his chair creakin' and foot hittin' the old no doubt weathered porch as he kept time. His wife occasionally accompanied. Well, let's just say it's good stuff.

So we had a little show at my studio space in the Hungerford last night, and the night before I was still at a loss of what to paint for it. Carter suggests Fred McDowell and so in about 3 hours, this happened.

Acrylic on cold press ill board. about 8x10.

I haven't painted traditionally in over a month or so. My photo reference was blacka nd white. In fact, I have never found a color photo of the man. So I just kinda guessed what his skin tone was. The first thirty minutes were just me slapping horrible chalky colours around, kinda quagmired in skin tones. Then suddenly it just happened.

God, that's a great feeling. I think I may have pushed the highlights too far in the end. Well, you live, you learn.

hiy'all. So there's a song by allison krauss called Jacob's Dream. It's realllllyyyyy effing sad. I would love to illustrate/animate it like a story. Here's a scene from it I doodle up the other day and quickly painted last night. Yeeaah, the one boy is dead. I think I might actually paint this one for real some day. acrylic, thirty minutes.
i doodled myself fighting the flu. showed it to my boyfriend (who had been dying of it earlier) and he said he'd probably just be throwing pills and medicine at it. So I drew him in there. We're both sort of alive now. I think.

first time i actually have somewhat successfully painted myself realistically.

I've been so busy at work that I haven't painted/drawn/doodled/ANYTHING in over two weeks. I doodle at work but those are on notebook paper haha

which OH! I am now a full time animator/designer at Workinman! It's awesome and I'm excited :) Been doing a lot of matte painting lately which has my digital skills gettin' better all the time.

Been in a bit of a creative rut lately. Been working on some commissions and been doing work for work. Ended up in the hospital last week. So good at taking care of myself.

this was for my mum's bday. she loves colin firth, and she loves cats. so i made the derpiest cat ever and stuck it in a rather grumpy mister darcy's arms.

honda 350s and horse teeth

so a couple months back, my friend Jocelyn and I went for a sunset ride out at Liberty Stables. Deb had a surprise for us- she had her friend Lily, a large animal vet, in to remove a rotting tooth. The horse in question, Paris, is 26 years old and probably won't be around much longer. It was surprisingly emotional, rather gory, and a lot of muscle. We hammered away at that tooth with a drill, the whole while with Paris in a crazy sort of mouth brace and heavily sedated.

Deb asked me to paint a scene from it, so I picked a less gory bit where she was merely smacking away at the tooth with a metal rod.

Two days ago I was driving back downtown when I saw the LANKIEST guy in the world riding this little Honda 350. He just simply did not fit. He had his helmet strapped over a baseball cap, little wireframe glasses, big fuck off work boots, and his little ratty ponytail and plaid overshirt blowin' in the breeze. When I got up close enough to see him I just about drove off the road laughing.
So when I made it to my studio, I just had to have a little doodle over it.
Oh, and there's a sneak peek of what I painted for my mum's bday behind it there... I'll post that once she actually gets it.

Heed my advice: when it is 94 degrees outside, do not I repeat DO NOT go to your un airconditioned notoriously hot studio space.

You will get heat stroke and sport a lovely headache the rest of the evening.

Allo! Been a while. Been super busy. Just doodle painted this tonight for an hour. Acrylic. My mind is a strange place.

I've been animating. Er, I should say falling in love. GOD I wish I'd majored in it or something. Yeahhh I'm just doing flash right now, but I love it.

Finished my first walk cycle today. It was so much easier than it was when I tried a few weeks back. I'm slowly learning this language they call Flash. A friend of one of my coworkers came in today, and he animates on the f**king amazing shows Superjail and Metalocalypse. Talk about inspiring!

just started painting out of my head. acrylic. looks better in reality. the Wash is because that's the bon iver song i've had in my head and on repeat for weeks now.

So I've been animating. It's crazy tough, like learning a whole new language. But when all the frustration and hair pulling gives way to your character coming to life, it's the most beautiful feeling ever. I've been designing Flash games and it is tough, but I really enjoy it.

Barely moved in and my car got broken into. Hoping I can do more art soon. I've got lots of ideas, but nothing is coming out like I want it to. It's frustrating and heart breaking.

so the day i got the keys to my awesome new apartment, i started moving in. as i was leaving for the day, i saw a puppy fall off the third story balcony of the house next to me. I ran over. He'd fallen on his back and broken several ribs and vertebrae. I yelled and yelled for someone as the poor thing was dying on me. I finally went in the house and found people, and much to my disgust, they didn't really seem to care. They had other beautiful dogs that were rather junkyard and violent, like a german shepherd and a rottweiler mix of some sort. This was a bulldog puppy.
Yeah, couldn't shake that image. Ended up drawing it. Poor thing still makes me cry.

it seems every summer an innocent dies in my hands. last summer a bird had hit the window and i held the thing until it expired too. Only makes me more of a bleeding heart, if that's possible.

haven't had much time for art, what with all my free time being spent moving/unpacking. I haven't even made it to my studio in a week!

Hullo all. My first week of work was awesome. I'm really enjoying what I'm doing and excited to learn more.
I can't wait to move downtown. I went to the public market in downtown Roch yesterday and am soooo ready to bring home fresh produce/bread/wine like I used to when I was in Paris. Oh man. It's going to be so fantastic. I'll also be right by my studio in the Hungerford Building and will be able to spend a LOT more time there. Tonight I just hung out there for 2 hours.

I'm in the middle of moving and starting a new internship on Tuesday and other things. I haven't got a lot of free time and currently my camera/cord are lost in the maelstrom of boxes and such. My scanner isn't hooked up either. AAAND internet is dicey.

I'm expecting a brief week of normalcy here as I dwell in my friend's basement, start my job, and start hanging out at my studio space downtown more.

Then INSANITY again as I move downtown. THEN. Normalcy. And posts. AND art. I promise.

I have a few pages killed in my new sketchbook. So there's stuff, I swear!!!

Any free time I have had I've spent either running or hanging out with friends who are leaving.

Hey y'all. I graduated! Got a BFA in Illustration with highest honors (3.81 gpa) from RIT! yayyy! and I get to start my new internship very soon. And move into a swag new apartment downtown in a couple weeks. and life... is hectic.. but amazing.

Today i spent the entire day in the Reporter office trying to help pull together the orientation issue. Simon Jones, Cassie Angerosa and her brother (an engineer who learned indesign in seconds) and I are blasting the Beatles and arting to death. We rock.

This ills are for that issue. I know I shouldn't technically post them until they're published, but dammit, that won't be for months, and by that time y'all will have forgotten about 'em. Or hey, early advertising.
This be the cover and a spot ill for something.

today i've busted out three ills in about 7 hours or so, minus breaks. I. am. tired.
ah well, signing a lease tomorrow.

It's been a wild, sad, happy, wonderful, horrible, overall intense ride, RIT. I will miss a lot of people. I hugged my profs before walking the stage and almost cried. Those guys become family after 3 years of creative growth. But since I'm staying here in Roch for a year, I don't feel as sad. I'll see them yet :)

So, life is completely awesome. I landed a summer internship at Workinman Interactive. I am so excited to learn new programs and work with some really awesome people in a sweet environment.
I'm staying in Rochester, working there, painting in the Hungerford, hopefully having shows nearly monthly, and enjoying summer with my friends :)

Hello darlings. It's been a wild ride, and it looks like a few curves ahead. All good. I mean, curves are awesome, right?That's my cowboy mural. There was an AK47 painted on the floor, too.

Anyways, we had The Gun Show. Man, I can't tell you how amazed I am that it happened, and how incredibly happy and grateful I am with its success. I pulled that show together in a week, and would never have been able to do it without the help and support of my friends. Special thanks to Greg Caggiano, who helped me set it all up in his studio space, and Brett Seamans n Lucy Lott for helping me get the ball rollin'. Thanks to everyone who gave me work to show, INCLUDING my professors <3

In other news, looks like I'm stayin in Rochester. Good people, good art scene, and I'll probably be sharing studio space in the Hungerford with the previously mentioned Greg and others. If all works out, we'll be trying to do a show like the Gun Show every month.

I'm happy about it. I love my friends here. I'm looking forward to a summer of painting and good music.

Tomorrow- going to Toronto to see Rammstein for the third effing time. Yeaah.

here's a spread I'm working on for my editorial class. My partner is the amazing Cristina Maxon and we're doing an article on mountaintop clearing. The blue ridge mountains of appalachia are being blown to smithereens for the coal within them. This breaks our hearts.
I love those mountains. They're ancestral to my family.

Naked Skydivers and Shows

This is the second spread of a piece I worked on for my Editorial Illustration class. We team up with a graphic designer and together create magazine worthy spreads n such. My first partner and I did some cool stuff too.. i should post those.
Anyways, I worked with Beth Flannery on this one, an article about Roberta Mancino, an Italian skydiver/model/black belt/ballerina who likes to skydive nude n such.
Acrylic.
this was in the first spread. I did the background/figure separate for ease of positioning but learned pretty quick it looks WAY better if you just paint the whole thing all as one.
Again, acrylic.

This is the final second spread. I love how Beth activated the text with the hair and all. Good stuff!

I liked that project because I broke free of my burnt sienna cage. I discovered that skin tones really only need cadmium red light, yellow ochre and titanium white. Studied some Vargas and Elvgren to figure that out.

In other news... Our senior illustration show, to be held at the Geisel Gallery in the Bausch n Lomb building downtown, was censored. If there was a weapon, near nudity, or other "objectionable material", they took work out. I checked out the show and some of the pieces were mislabeled, too.

I got pissed and with the help of some amazing friends, pulled together our OWN damn show. We have the closing with family n friends at the current show on April 29th. But we're having an uncensored show in the Hungerford building downtown on May 6th, First Friday (there's a ton of other shows going on there that night- be sure to stop by). Some RIT Illustration alums were amazing enough to let us use their studio space, and they're showing work with us too.
We may have two spaces in the building that night, still trying to figure all that out.

I'm hella excited, and I hope you all come by for some art, wine, and people.

Anyways, NYC wrap up... I don't really wanna live there UNLESS it's the Lower East Side. Or Noho. or Soho. but you need moneyss. I hear good things about Bushwick, too. Anyone wants to move there with me, I am game. It is THE up and coming art center!!! (but shoot for fixed rent!)

But oh GOD. Galleries, cool bakeries, amazing record stores, and the BEST dumplings ever (thanks megan and maruska!!!) ... Pretty good times.

Learned a lot, felt like i was gonna make it, felt like i'd never make it, was pumped up, humbled, and generally exhausted.

but I did have one thing absolutely hammered down for me.

I want to be an illustrator.

I realize it's going to be tough nigh impossible, but dammit. I love this. I want this. I know this.
Tough to explain, but I just know it.

SO I was on a 7 hour train to NYC and these guys started... I will finish rendering the horses, and maybe add some colour and repost. :)

Hi. That girl is me. That's my friend kayla in my book. I drew her when we were between stuffs and wandering central park... When I get a scanner in my paws again I'll scan and post more nyc stuff. Basically if we sit down for longer than 2 seconds somewhere, we all whip out sketchbooks and start drawing each other.

The illustrators of RIT are running about new york. Today we met fine artist Leslie Wayne. The photos of her work don't do it justice... it's actually very dimensional and completely beautiful. And the visit was great. Later this week we will meet Brad Holland!!! SO EXCITED.

We were eating at the Society of Illustrators (after checking out the R. Crumb show- fantastic!) and !!!!Richard Solomon!!!! walks in with his beautiful young artist assistants. He gave us some great advice and asked us all to participate in a contest, which you can check out on his site.
He said a style is essential. He also said, paint whatever you want, but keep nudes, still life studies, and landscapes out of you portfolio. Make it marketable. And keep trying.

Tomorrow we get to check out more vintage ills and hopefully more galleries.

I like NYC but I gotta say, I vastly prefer Paris. Easier to get around and honestly... cleaner. Sorry ny. but the NYC Subway could take a lesson from the Paris Metro. Still. I like it here. I'd stay awhile.

so someone told me this is actually jared leto. uh, i wouldn't really know but, okay.

My photo ref was black/white, so I made up the flesh tones n all.

About 1 1/2 hours, total, not including random wandering breaks?

I'm happy that my traditional time and digital time are almost identical now.

The last two portraits I did (clint eastwood and jeff bridges) were really loose, so I tried to tighten this one up a bit.

whilst flipping through some old Paper magazines snagged from my lovely art director at reporter, I came across the adorable Max Winkler, son of Henry Winkler, better known as The Fonz. This guy... I just wanna hug him. Kiss him on the cheek. I bet he giggles.

So tonight I weaned myself off the round brush (and a few other favorites) and I forced myself to paint with some new photoshop brushes.

I love it.

That's Pete Townshend of the Who. I was pretty much obsessed with him as a kid.

Took an hour.
I did not take a photo, I painted myself from a mirror. It's off. I just have such a tough time painting myself. I did this before the Pete one, so it's also me getting used to the new brush.

I'm probably going to do another one yet tonight, I"ll be sure to post it on this post.

So for this class, Visual Essay, we have to do three final pieces that visually describe an event/place. I chose Liberty Stables, a place I ride out in the finger lakes in upstate New York. I had all these lovely ideas, but when I went in early one sunday morning for reference, I liked my ref way better than my original thoughts.

Today I did some quick messy watercolour colour studies.

We had a warm spell where all the snow melted... so all the horses are just coated in mud. We had to get as much of it off as we could.
Pirate, my first fav horse there. With some colourful curry brushes in the back.
Whiskey's tail being groomed by one of the guys. I rode Whiskey later and that dang girl almost killed me. I somehow held on from being bucked/reared/sidestepped all over the whole ride. The other riders said I should be a rodeo girl. I love riding but not like that.

She's a new horse and doesn't get along well with others- they don't let students ride her.
really fast last minute one of pirate staring at me confusedly with the colourful brushes/leadropes in the foreground. If i do a final of this one it'll obviously be better haha

in other news... I haven't posted because I've been busy making xmas cards for some people. I included a couple on here, but for most I actually forgot to take pictures. I didn't make too many because I spent a lot of time on each one, and I only made them for people who asked.

Today I was in a very early morning class and had trudged in through a rather monumental amount of snow.

As I sat there, trying desperately to feign alertness, I realized that my snowboots had dripped a rather sizable puddle onto the floor.

A puddle that looked all funny. So I drew the puddle. And the puddle turned into that guy up there.

He totally was throwing up the horns, man.

and then i watercoloured it. woooo.

more 40 minute or so speedpaints on the train. spent more time on the skull for fun's sake.

bottom one is me. I tried a few other self- portraits and oy. I can draw ANYONE else pretty well but I just have a horrific time painting moi.

I'm back in Rochester. NYC was nice. The concert was amazing.

I've decided I am not in love with any city or coast, really.

Will go anywhere.
